Overview
In the dog it has two separate parts: a cranial part forming the cranial contour of the thigh, and a caudal part on the medial surface.
Origin
- Cranial part: crest of the ilium and thoracolumbar fascia.
- Caudal part: cranial ventral iliac spine and the adjacent ventral border of the ilium.
Insertion
- Cranial part: patella, through the medial femoral fascia.
- Caudal part: cranial border of the tibia, on its medial side.
Action
Flexes the hip and adducts the limb. The cranial part extends the stifle and the caudal part flexes it.
Innervation
Femoral nerve (n. femoralis), through the saphenous nerve.
Clinical relevance
The caudal part of the sartorius forms the cranial border of the femoral triangle, where the femoral pulse is palpated.
