Diseases

Corneal ulcerTraumatic
Loss of the corneal epithelium, with or without loss of stroma. A common, painful eye emergency; deep, melting or non-healing ulcers can lead to perforation and loss of the eye.
EntropionCongenital / developmental
Inward rolling of the eyelid margin, so that hair rubs on the cornea and conjunctiva. Mostly inherited and linked to the conformation of the head; it causes pain, keratitis and corneal ulcers. In the cat it is less common and often secondary to other eye disease.
Feline herpesvirus keratoconjunctivitisInfectious
Ocular infection with feline herpesvirus type 1, which remains latent for life and reactivates with stress. It causes conjunctivitis and dendritic corneal ulcers, and in adult cats stromal keratitis, corneal sequestrum and eosinophilic keratitis.
Feline infectious peritonitisInfectious
Immune-mediated, systemic disease caused by a mutated variant of feline enteric coronavirus. It produces pyogranulomatous vasculitis with effusions (wet form) or granulomas in organs (dry form), including the eyes and nervous system. Once almost always fatal, it is now cured in most treated cats with current antivirals.
Feline injection-site sarcomaNeoplastic
Malignant soft-tissue sarcoma that develops where a vaccine or another product was injected, months or years earlier. It is highly infiltrative and recurs easily; it is prevented by vaccinating in the distal limbs or the tail.
DermatophytosisInfectious
Superficial infection of the hair, skin and claws by dermatophyte fungi, in the cat mainly Microsporum canis. It causes alopecia with scaling, is highly contagious between animals and is a common zoonosis.
Feline eosinophilic granuloma complexInflammatory
A group of eosinophil-rich skin and oral lesions of the cat, comprising indolent lip ulcer, eosinophilic plaque and eosinophilic granuloma. They are a reaction pattern, almost always secondary to allergy, rather than a disease in themselves.
