Diseases

Equine recurrent uveitisInflammatory
Inflammation of the uvea that recurs or persists for months or years and gradually destroys the eye. It is the leading cause of blindness in the horse; it is linked to intraocular infection with leptospires and to a genetic predisposition, especially in the Appaloosa.
Equine sarcoidNeoplastic
Fibroblastic skin tumour associated with bovine papillomavirus. It is the most common skin tumour of equids; it does not metastasise, but it invades locally, recurs easily after incomplete treatment and can affect delicate areas such as the eyelids.
LeptospirosisInfectious
Bacterial infection with pathogenic leptospires transmitted through the urine of carrier animals. In dogs it causes acute kidney injury, liver disease and sometimes severe pulmonary haemorrhage. In cattle serovar Hardjo causes abortion, infertility and a drop in milk production. In horses it is associated with recurrent uveitis, abortion and acute kidney failure. It is a zoonosis.
Equine metabolic syndromeMetabolic
A cluster of disturbances, centred on insulin dysregulation and often with obesity, that predisposes the horse to laminitis. It is the underlying cause of most laminitis seen in practice and is controlled mainly with diet and exercise.
LaminitisMetabolic
Failure of the attachment between the hoof wall and the third phalanx, which can let the bone rotate or sink inside the hoof. Most cases are endocrine (equine metabolic syndrome or pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction); others accompany severe systemic inflammation or overload of the supporting limb.
Navicular syndromeDegenerative
Chronic pain in the palmar region of the foot from lesions of the navicular bone and the structures around it (the podotrochlear apparatus). One of the most common causes of bilateral forelimb lameness in adult horses.
Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunctionDegenerative
Neurodegenerative disease of older horses. Loss of dopaminergic control from the hypothalamus makes the pars intermedia of the pituitary enlarge and oversecrete; it causes a long coat that does not shed, laminitis, muscle loss and infections. It is the most common endocrinopathy of older equids.
