Origin
Proximal end of the tibia (cranial border and lateral surface), head of the fibula and interosseous membrane.
Insertion
Medial side of the distal tarsus, on the rudimentary metatarsal bone I.
Action
Flexes the tarsus.
Innervation
Common fibular (peroneal) nerve (n. fibularis communis).
Clinical relevance
- In the neurological examination its belly is tapped to elicit tarsal flexion (cranial tibial reflex), which tests the fibular nerve.
- In feline aortic thromboembolism this muscle and the gastrocnemius become firm and painful from ischaemia.
