Overview
Classic feline anatomy texts describe three deltoids: clavodeltoid, acromiodeltoid and spinodeltoid. The clavodeltoid is the cleidobrachialis, which veterinary nomenclature places in the brachiocephalicus. The other two are the parts of the deltoideus:
- Scapular part (pars scapularis): the spinodeltoid. It arises from the spine of the scapula and covers part of the infraspinatus.
- Acromial part (pars acromialis): the acromiodeltoid, shorter, arising from the acromion.
Origin
Spine of the scapula (scapular part) and acromion (acromial part).
Insertion
Deltoid tuberosity (tuberositas deltoidea) of the humerus.
Action
Flexes the shoulder and abducts the arm.
Innervation
Axillary nerve (n. axillaris).
