Overview

Origin
Last sacral vertebrae, first caudal vertebrae and gluteal fascia.
Insertion
Greater trochanter of the femur, on the caudolateral side of its base; some of its fibres continue into the fascia lata.
Action
Extends the hip and abducts the pelvic limb.
Innervation
Caudal gluteal nerve (n. gluteus caudalis).
